Perfume comes with plenty of rules. Most of them are optional.

Our position is simple, your perfume ritual should please you first so spray a little or a lot, wear it somewhere expected or somewhere that makes no sense to anyone else.

Knowing how to store and apply perfume can help it last longer on your skin and stay at its best inside the bottle. Beyond that, you make the rules.

SHOULD YOU RUB YOUR WRISTS TOGETHER

Contrary to what you may have heard, rubbing your wrists will not bruise, break or emotionally damage your perfume. It will create friction and heat though, which may encourage the top notes to evaporate more quickly. If you want to experience the full opening, just spray and let it settle. If rubbing your wrists is part of your pleasure, continue. Your ritual, your business.

HOW TO MAKE PERFUME LAST LONGER

Perfume generally holds better on moisturised skin. Apply an unscented moisturiser, allow it to absorb, then spray. You can also spread the fragrance across several areas rather than concentrating every spray in one place. A little on the neck, clothing and hair creates a softer trail around you.

Skin, weather and formula all affect longevity. Heat tends to increase projection and evaporation. Cooler weather often keeps perfume closer to the body.

More projection does not always mean more longevity. More sprays do mean more perfume. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.

HOW TO STORE PERFUME

Our bottles are navy blue for more than just eye-candy, it helps protect the perfume from light.

Heat, humidity, sunlight and repeated temperature changes can affect a fragrance over time. Store your bottle upright somewhere cool, dark and dry. A cupboard, drawer or wardrobe works well. Keeping it inside its original box adds another layer of protection.

SHOULD A PERFUME LIVE IN THE BATHROOM

Probably not. Bathrooms temperatures fluctuate between heat, steam and cooler air. Those fluctuations can affect a perfume over time. So if you can write your name in the steam on the mirror in your bathroom, your perfume has better places to be.

DOES PERFUME BELONG IN THE FRIDGE?

For most people, a cool, dark cupboard is enough but if you live somewhere extremely warm, a dedicated cosmetics fridge may provide a more stable environment and a cool spritz on a hot day.

Stable is the important word. Avoid moving perfume repeatedly between intense cold and heat. A kitchen refrigerator is not normally necessary, and the coldest shelf will not earn you extra points.

Keep the bottle upright, replace the cap and avoid unnecessary temperature swings.

NATURAL MATERIALS MAY CHANGE SUBTLY

Perfumes made with a high proportion of natural materials may change subtly in colour over time. Botanical extracts, resins and essential oils are complex, and some naturally deepen as they age.

A small colour change does not automatically mean the perfume has spoiled. A dramatic change in smell, texture or clarity may indicate poor storage or deterioration.

When in doubt, trust your nose.

FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY

Perfume belongs on the outside. Do not ingest it. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and sensitive areas. Apply only to intact skin and stop using it if irritation occurs. Allow perfume to dry before approaching flames or other ignition sources, and keep it out of reach of children and follow any instructions supplied with your fragrance regarding sun exposure.

Keep your perfume somewhere cool, dark and stable and apply it wherever you enjoy experiencing it.
