Buying perfume through a screen requires imagination and a little fluency. Fragrance families and words like balsamic, animalic, fougère and resinous all offer clues, once you know how to read them.
This glossary translates perfume language into something more useful: how a scent might feel, move and settle on skin. Consider it your cheat sheet.
Notes are clues, not a formula. Two perfumes can share the same materials and smell completely different. Skin, climate and memory shift the result again.
The fragrance family gives you the direction. The descriptive words reveal the texture, mood and character. Together, they help you decide whether a perfume is worth meeting on your skin.

AMBER / AMBERY
WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE: Warm, rich and enveloping.
Amber is usually built from resins such as labdanum and benzoin, softened with vanilla. Smooth, sensual and made to linger after dark.

ANIMALIC

CITRUS
WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE: Bright, sparkling, juicy and immediate.
Bergamot, lemon, lime, grapefruit and mandarin bring instant lift and energy. They arrive first, shine brightly, then quickly make way for the rest of the composition.
MEET IT IN: TORTUGA TWINS, an aromatic citrus woody perfume opening with bergamot, grapefruit and petitgrain before fresh herbs, spices and woods come forward.
DRY
WHAT IT SMELLS LIKE: Woody, smoky, papery, mineral or slightly bitter.
Dry describes texture rather than moisture. Think crisp edges, restrained sweetness and nothing syrupy.

EARTHY
