When considering fragrance vs perfume, the distinction is simple: fragrance is the composition, while perfume is the finished product you wear.

Before there is a bottle, there is a formula. A perfumer works with essential oils, botanical extracts, resins, woods, spices, flowers and carefully selected nature-identical ingredients. Some materials arrive loudly. Others wait. Certain combinations make perfect sense on paper and refuse to cooperate anywhere else.

Together, these materials form the fragrance concentrate: the aromatic architecture at the centre of the finished product.

Fragrance is also the broader word. A candle has fragrance. So does a room spray, a body cream or the shirt of someone who has already left. It describes what has been composed or simply what can be smelled.

PERFUME BEGINS WHEN THE FORMULA LEAVES THE LABORATORY

When a fragrance concentrate is blended with alcohol at a chosen concentration, rested, filtered and bottled, it becomes a finished perfume.

At 528 UNDERGROUND, our fragrance concentrates are blended with organic alcohol to create eaux de parfum. Each batch is made in small quantities in the South of France and infused with a 528 Hz vibration as part of our creative ritual. That is the technical transformation.

The more interesting one happens when the perfume reaches your skin.

Heat begins moving through the formula. The brighter materials rise first. Others take their time. Woods, resins, spices and botanical extracts appear, disappear and return in different forms.

The fragrance was completed by the perfumer.

The perfume is completed by the person wearing it.

AND THEN THERE IS SCENT

Scent is less formal. Scent is rain hitting warm pavement. Crushed herbs on your fingers. Somebody’s neck. A hotel corridor at two in the morning. The trace left on a coat weeks after you last wore it. It is what we call fragrance when it escapes the language of formulation and becomes personal.

You can describe a perfume by its family, concentration and materials. But scent is usually remembered through something else: a place, a person, a mistake, a version of yourself you had almost forgotten.

PARFUM, EAU DE PARFUM OR EAU DE TOILETTE?

These names usually indicate how much fragrance concentrate is present in the finished product.

Parfum or extrait is generally the most concentrated. Eau de parfum follows, then eau de toilette and eau de cologne. Useful information, just not the entire personality.

More concentration does not automatically mean more projection, better quality or greater compatibility with your skin. Some perfumes fill a room. Others stay close enough to require an invitation. It's the formula that decides how a perfume behaves. The concentration only tells you part of the story.

WHY PERFUME REFUSES TO SMELL THE SAME ON EVERYONE

Skin temperature, moisture, weather and application all influence how a perfume develops.

Natural materials add another kind of movement. A botanical extract is not a single flat smell. It can contain dozens, sometimes hundreds, of aromatic facets. One may become brighter on warm skin. Another may turn earthier, smokier or more intimate. The perfume has not changed its identity.

It has just met a different person.

At 528 UNDERGROUND, we use fragrance when we talk about the composition: how it is structured, how the materials interact and what the perfumer created.

We use perfume for the finished eau de parfum: the bottle you choose, spray and wear.

We use scent for what refuses to remain inside either definition. The trail, the memory and the part that becomes yours.

The words overlap. They always will and nobody needs correcting across a dinner table, and the perfume police have more important crimes to investigate.

The distinction is simply this:

Fragrance is created. Perfume is worn. Scent is remembered.
